Mandatory Guardian Training Coming July 1, 2025
You may have heard that 2024 legislation requires Virginia guardians to complete a training. No guardian is required to complete the training at this time. The training will not be released until July 1, 2025, and if you are a current guardian, you will have until January 1, 2027 to complete it. If you would like additional details, see below. Otherwise, please check back here after June 30, 2025.
The Virginia General Assembly passed legislation in 2024 requiring guardians and any skilled professionals they retain to assist with their duties (“skilled professionals”) to complete a training.
This online guardian training is in development by DARS and will be implemented by July 1, 2025. A link to the training will be available on this page.
The deadline for completing the training will depend on when the guardian was appointed:
Appointment Date | Training Completion Deadline |
---|---|
Prior to July 1, 2025 | January 1, 2027 |
July 1, 2025 or after | Within 120 days after the date of qualification, unless completed in connection with another guardianship within the past 36 months. |
Reporting
The Annual Guardian Report (Form CC1644), officially titled “Report of Guardian for an Incapacitated Person,” will be amended prior to July 1, 2025, to request a statement as to whether a guardian and any skilled professionals they have retained have completed the required training.
